Compressibility of Membrane Bioreactor Sludge: Modelling Cake Build-up and Specific Cake Resistance
نویسندگان
چکیده
Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are applied for municipal wastewater treatment with advantages such as high effluent quality and low footprint. However, membrane fouling is inevitable even at low fluxes. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of fouling mechanisms and filter cake characteristics based on modeling and results from both full, pilot and lab-scale MBRs. It has been found that MBR sludge is highly compressible and applying this knowledge enabled modeling of the cake build-up and changes in specific cake resistance in MBR systems with both synthetic and real wastewater feed. Thus, the established model might enable optimization of operation parameters such as pressure level and relaxation frequency from lab-scale experiments with the same sludge and feed conditions.

A comparison study on membrane fouling in a sponge-submerged membrane bioreactor and a conventional membrane bioreactor.
This study compared membrane fouling in a sponge-submerged membrane bioreactor (SSMBR) and a conventional membrane bioreactor (CMBR) based on sludge properties when treating synthetic domestic wastewater. In the CMBR, soluble microbial products (SMP) in activated sludge were a major contributor for initial membrane fouling and presented higher concentration in membrane cake layer. Afterwards, m...
متن کاملInvestigation of the role of biopolymer clusters in MBR membrane fouling using flash freezing and environmental scanning electron microscopy.
The technique that employs flash freezing and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) was utilised for detailed investigation of the fouling materials in a membrane bioreactor (MBR). The method involves the flash freezing of a wet sample in liquid nitrogen for 10s to preserve its structure for direct ESEM observation with a high image resolution. ESEM images show that the sludge cake ...
متن کاملMembrane filtration device for studying compression of fouling layers in membrane bioreactors
A filtration devise was developed to assess compressibility of fouling layers in membrane bioreactors. The system consists of a flat sheet membrane with air scouring operated at constant transmembrane pressure to assess the influence of pressure on resistance of fouling layers. By fitting a mathematical model, three model parameters were obtained; a back transport parameter describing the kinet...

Two parallel anaerobic membrane bioreactors (MBRs), integrated with or without ultrasound equipment for online membrane fouling control (US-AnMBR, or AnMBR) were established to digest waste activated sludge (WAS). The characteristics of bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and bacterial communities in the systems were investigated for further understanding of the membrane fouling mech...

We have combined a turbulent jet flow ozone contactor (TJC) with a membrane bioreactor (MBR) to establish a zero-discharge system in terms of excess sludge in the MBR. The TJC-MBR system was compared with the conventional MBR (Control-MBR) with respect to i) the size and zeta potential of the sludge particles, ii) the loosely bound extra-cellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and tightly bound EP...
